Before 2000 the airport served Bleckley County as a city-owned, public general aviation field supporting recreational flying, agricultural spraying, hangars, and tie-downs.
Former Mayor Charles M. Killabrew had relentlessly worked to obtain funding through Georgia One to build a new runway. Due to his efforts in March 2008, Runway 11/29 was opened and named in his honor. The airport was also given the name of Red Curtis Field in honor of H.D. "Red" Curtis for his many years of providing flight instruction, maintenance, and aerial application on the airport.
In 2009, the Cochran Airport Authority was formed and later changed to the "Cochran-Bleckley Airport Authority." The Cochran-Bleckley Airport Authority, or CBAA, with the support of the City of Cochan and Bleckley County government officials, has greatly enhanced the growth of the airport. The Authority's leadership and hard work has contributed to the airport's tremendous growth, with a 10 aircraft "T-Hangar" previously built, and an additional 10 aircraft "T-Hangar" coming in the first quarter of 2026.
In October 2024, Middle Georgia State University opened a small campus/classroom at the Cochran Airport to support aviation programs and local training needs. Gear Up Aircraft Rental also provides flight instruction utilizing two aircraft and a third in the works. Martin Aviation Repair Services provides aviation maintenance for all general and corporate aviation needs. The airport still supports our area agricultural needs with Middle Georgia Aviation providing aerial application.
Through the continued efforts of the airport manager, CBAA, city, county, and state entities, the Cochran Airport will continue to grow and remain a vital asset for generations to come.
